Before journeying on to the National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL, Austin American-Statesman ran a piece on him about his training and healthy lifestyle. See below.
Joe Barger, 91, heads to National Senior Games
Joe Barger, dressed for a run on a recent muggy morning, says he just wants to finish his races at the National Senior Games later this week.
Then a sly grin creeps across his face. Actually, he confesses, he’s also aiming to take down his nemesis — a fast and lean runner named Charlie Baker, who just aged up into the 90- to 95-year-old age group alongside Barger, who is 91.
Barger will line up at the starting blocks of seven events — the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 meters and the 5K — at this year’s games, which are held in alternating years. Athletes qualify by placing at a state meet, and 2017 will mark Barger’s fifth trip to nationals. That’s particularly impressive considering he never competed in sports as a student and just started running in his 60s.
